What species could this 5 mm female be? I thought of pomonae but coloring on legs does not fit.

Photos from 20 may 2013 Kramfors 62 N, E 17 Ångermanland, Sweden.

B. pomonae is active much later in summer. Red-legged spring species are B. lanigerus and B. johannis. The females are hardly separable. Also B. femoralis should be kept in mind (http://www.dipter...d_id=20163).

What about B. varipes? Is that also a possibility?

I have not seen this species myself. However, the problem is that your fly is a female. The males can be told apart more easily. Theo Zeegers, who is very good in Bibionids, once said "Not possible to separate lanigerus, varipes, reticulatus." (http://www.dipter...d_id=30037) You can add johannis to the list as well. Look for the male :D!

The inner spur of the fore leg seems too long for Bibio johannis.

That is, not possible to separate from picture.

Also the light due to the flash might be misleading.
The posterior veins seems dark, in which case nigriventris comes to mind. Impossible to judge the antennal length, though.
