I was testing a new macro set-up and photographed this small fly in my garden this evening.
Location: Vancouver, BC, Canada.
Size: 4-5 mm long
Is this a type of Drosophila. or something else?
Cheers,
EC

Not Drosophila! But I'm afraid they're the only flies I can recognize. From a position of complete ignorance, I might guess Lauxaniidae?

Thanks! I looked-up Lauxaniidae and that certainly looks right to me...but I don't even pretend to have any particular expertise with Diptera identification.
Can anyone else confirm that this is Lauxaniidae?

You might want to edit the title of the post, so that any Lauxaniidae enthusiasts see it and respond.

Meiosimyza or something close to it - did you collect specimen?

You can recognize the genus from a photo! Wow, that’s impressive! I looked up Meiosimyza and it certainly looks like the same beast.
I didn’t collect it, but it would be easy enough to get a specimen: a number of them seem to settle on one particular fern in my garden each night.
I can also provide a higher quality photo.
Thanks for the help,
EC
