Hello,
This weekend I saw this Tipulid male in the same swampy place east of Berlin where I photographed similar females ovipositing in the mud some years ago. What about
Tipula lateralis?

I think so. Saw the first one here in Ostwestfalen last week in a damp place at a meadow creek. This is usually the earliest
Tipula species here in spring.

You may be right. Compared to the male I photographed this afternoon, also the abdomen seems too light.

There are more important differences.
T. lateralis and
T. vittata belong to different subgenera,
Yamatotipula and
Acutipula.

Yamatotipula sub-genus is identified by the thin line running down the top of the thorax from just behind the head." This line in the middle of the thorax can be seen in your photo. Also the wing colouration is quite different. The
T. vittata wings are described "The wings have 'smoky' areas along the leading and trailing edges separated by a strikingly white streak at the wing tip. This one also sports a prominent dark 'Y' shaped vein towards the wing trailing edge." This goes with my upper picture fine.

I agree on T (Acutipula) vittata for the first one and T (Yamatotipula) sp. for the second one :)
