I have just taken this fly from woodland edge in N Scotland. The whole fly is attached here. two posts with details of wing and antenna will follow. The antenna is odd - the third segment is very short, notched, and surrounded by the cup-like segment 2.

A family name would be welcome.

Murdo

The antenna. Sorry about the quality - I don't have access to image stacking.

Heleomyzidae. The third antennal segment is missing. Should be big and round. Probably Heleomyza sp. Andrzej

Ah - that explains a lot! I will work on that family and see if I can get further.

Thanks

... and it seems to be Heleomyza serrata from the genitalia.
