Hello:
I think is Chrysops caecutiens. Is correct?.
Photo taken in Pontevedra (NW Iberian Peninsula) on 22/07/2012.
Thanks.

If the whole legs are black, than your ID is correct.

The first pair of legs is completely black. The rest have a few small reddish zones.

Strange animal. It is clear in the key on European Chrysops, which starts: (1) Legs including tibiaea completely black. (1') Tibiae brown. Remind this topic any evening about 21.00, I stry to look again with the key and collection.

I would say that it is a dark C. relictus

Chrysops caecutiens, that's for sure. According to some keys (e. g. Olsufjev,1977) caecutiens may have some brown coloration at the base of mid tibia and hind tarsi.

Luis, if you have absolute certainity, send me the specimen. But I am almost sure your ID and my tentative revision are correst. So I agree with Sergiy = Ch. caecutiens. But not for 100%

Thank you Libor. I don´t have the specimen (only it was photographed in my garden). If I return to find other one similar I can gather it if you think that could have interest.

Luis
