Another UK specimen for the attention of those who know more than I do. :)

Location: SJ491852, suburban front garden
Date: 2012-09-15
Ambient conditions: Bright sunshine, warm, humid.
Numerous Lepidoptera nectaring on adjacent Buddleias during the photography of this specimen.

A quick check of the Syrphidae images here suggests that Sphaerophoria scripta is a possible ID for this specimen, but of course, I'm aware that there are people who know more than I do, who may well be thinking "oh dear". :D

Needless to say, I'll be very pleased if I have alighted upon the right ID myself for this!

Find a male and you'll have more chance...females can't really be done to species.

Not even by dissection? Is the group that difficult?
