the antenna scapes are quite different from any I've seen so far.
Collected 9 September, Ottawa Canada
length a bit less than 2 mm

In Chironomidae and related families the scape is reduced and pedicel enlarged, especially in males. This might be Orthocladiinae. I can't make out wing veins clearly.

Thanks for the clarification, John. I still haven't seen one like this before, so it must be new for me. This is the best I can get of the venation - I really should build a setup for transmitted light for it.

Eyes seem to be bare. Dorsal view of genitalia and eyes (showing size of dorsal extension) may help, but the subfamily is very difficult.

Agreed, but I did manage to figure out one of them that I had several examples of, so I'll see if MND delivers this time...

Also a photo of another specimen with a 40x objective I've just located (metallurgical lwd ones don't come up for sale often). There are hundreds swarming right now in the lee of my patio swing.
