Hello friends,

in material of a Malaise trap of Joop Prijs, which stood in June 2011 in the dunes at Braakman, Zeeuws-Vlaanderen, the Netherlands, I found this female Chrysopilus. Given the whitish hairs on the underside of the head I thought it is possibly a C. splendidus. The specimen is quite damaged. I hope it is possible to draw any conclusion.

Ruud, could you upload the pictures of a thorax from side view and of a wing?

and here a lateral view. I don't know what you would like to see in detail, Libor. In case it is still not clear, let me know.

As you see the specimen is very damaged in the Malaise trap. It just caught my attention for the whitish hairs on the underside of the head, which made me think of splendidus.

Yes, Ruud, thanks for the pictures. I have not splendidus in my collection yet. But using all available keys and comparing it with my cristatus, I agree you have got splendidus. Nice! I hope I got it soon too :)

thank you so muc, Libor. Please, do me a favour and tell me which characteristics lead to your conclusion. I have here only some older keys. I am inclined to think that these are not up-to-date any more.
Paul, when I read in Volkert's KNNV key of 1985 I see that splendidus is, to put it mildly, uncommon in the Netherlands. Or has this species now much more often been recorded? If not, I will prpeare this specimen for Naturalis.

Ruud, no complete recent key on European Rhagionidae is available. I am using the combination of (1) Rozkošný R. & Spitzer K. 1965: Schnepfenfliegen (Diptera, Rhagionidae) in der Tschechoslowakei. Acta entomologica bohemoslovaca 62: 340-368. (2) Nartschuk's key from 1988, (3) http://home.hccnet.nl/mp.van.veen/KEYS/Rhagionidae/Rhagionidae.html, and (4) e-mail communication with doc. Spitzer.
