found at the same spot in Hertfordshire as Nowickia ferox. Could this be Linnaemya vulpina

many thanks. No heath around, grassy meadow beside a conifer plantation. It was on the same spot the following day right beside the conifers. (exact location and better pics on ispot, showing eyes with pale hairs low down)

Interesting but I just associate them with heath where they can be very common, and they probably occur in other habitats too :)
EDIT: hosts apparently feed on heather and reeds
