I have recently returned from co-leading a Botanical tour in Bulgaria where this large fly (body length 20mm) was visiting
Verbascum flowers at a roadside stop near Dospat on 28 June 2012. Any suggestions on identification would be appreciated.
Very many thanks

I'd be happy to check the identity for you. It is recorded as widespread in that part of Europe, including Bulgaria.
