Zambia Tabanidae
Haematopota abyssinica?
Date 26.i.11. Size 10mm
Miombo Woodland. Location:
This belongs to the
abyssinica group which are characterised by the elongate abdomen with a pair of subantennal spots. I think this is
H. abyssinica s.s. - it is recorded in the literature for Zambia and is widespread in Central Africa.
A few individuals taken, one of which at 8.5mm may be a different species.

PS these photos were taken of the dried specimen after clearing in solvent as it was greasy. It seems to have brought out the eye band pattern:)

Here is a photo of the freshly caught specimen clearly showing the long narrow abdomen.
