I like this fly. It looks suitably bizarre that I can entertain a hope that it will be identified (as per Dolichotachina caudata, a couple of months ago).
Larger than expected, pushing a centimetre or more (excluding legs).
Bosham, West Sussex,
14 March 2012.
Flew out of an ornamental lawn and settled on an overhanging twig, where it was quite determined to remain.

Chironomini. Dorsal closeup of male genitalia may help ID.
It's a newly emerged male. Midges like to rest a while to harden before seeking mates.

The computer won't let me add the (slightly out of focus) dorsal image I have of it's ahem, so I'll try uploading it again tomorrow.

The not-very-clear image of its unmentionable, later than predicted. Had been hoping to spot another but alas, not as yet.
