As far as I can tell, this is indistinguishable from the bluebottle Calliphora vomitaria. However, I'm not sure whether my version of indistinguishable actually means anything, and whether there are a number of similar looking flies in the UK.

19 February 2012.

Bosham, West sussex (UK)

Ornamental garden, ivy-covered wall in the sunlight.

(In explanation of posting something that should presumably be instantly recogniseable, and for the entertainment value, I should note that, having never noticed a bluebottle before, I was rather excited when I saw this one, and chased it around the garden for some time. Now that I've seen one, though, they seem to be everywhere...)

C. vomitoria and C. vicina look very similar in dorsal view, and both are common in the UK.

Looking at the two in the gallery, and peering at the other angle, this one seems to lack the golden beard of C. vomitaria in the gallery, so I'm going with C. vicina.

Thanks!

Will.

Edit - here's the (also not very informative where it comes to the chin in question) other angle cropped to its face.
