Hello!

A rather big (10 mm) mosquito at the light in our garden tonight (northwest Germany). Culiseta annulata female?

Not sure if this will be nameable beyond something like Culiseta sp. The advice with these in the UK is to start under the microscope with x80 magnification to study the tarsal ratios.

Still, your individual doesn't look unlike one I'd normally assign to anything but the most commonly-referred to species - C. annulata.

Jason, none European Culiseta has preapical white rings on femora, except Cs. annulata. Your conclusions are different?

Well, I was only really being cautious! I read a while back about the possibility of another that may head over though it's unlikely. Given the difficulty of these (for the reasons I gave) I thought I'd go down the hint-at-but-not-actually-say route.

Therefor our conclusion may in fact be the same ;)

I'm curious Jason, what is that other species you read about?:)

Ah, thanks to you, too.
