A change in the wind! Did I perhaps get marginally better at identifying insects? Probably not, but these were small and relatively unbristly so blamed them on a different page of the so-called comprehensive guide to insects of South Africa.
The first of three small, innocuous flies that did not like the flash and, if they did drown in the pool, did not survive intact, meet "Call it Tephritidae 1", perched atop a nailbrush.
EDIT: sorry, details of fly:
Location - bathroom sink, low-level agricultural land, Chongwe District, Lusaka, Zambia.
Date - 30-09-2011
Size - Very small, I tend to overestimate measurements, so about the size of a standard laboratory female Drosophila melanogaster (4-5mm?)

It is a tephritid, indeed, but no further ID. Sorry.
