Hello,

This small fly landed on my door on 26th December, near Lincoln UK. I don't remember the size but it was no more than 5mm and probably a lot less.

I've found one with wing venation very similar but it doesn't appear to be in the UK, Greenomyia joculator from drawwing..

I think G. mongolica is the only species found in the U.K. and was added a few years ago. It was introduced and has since spread nationwide. Compare with:

I found a key, the one you suggest matches well in all areas which are shown on the key, wings and palps are spot on!

That is a nice key, thanks for the link! I don't think it has turned up in Ireland yet so I am keeping an eye out!

I posted it on the dipterists forum here, the notes at the right of the map state for No. 8 (Chandler 2010) gives 7 different localities with references when holding the arrow over the notes. Tony Irwin has said the localities are Surrey, Cambridgeshire, Essex, Suffolk and Oxfordshire.

I have now added my location, the record has been sent to Peter Chandler, he says this is only the second for 2011 (other in Cambridgeshire where the recorder had already found it previously) and is rather a late one but we have had unusually mild weather and I was lucky to see it with camera in hand (it didn't stay for long!). In 2010 Peter found it on Hogweed in ride in a conifer plantation in Somerset, another was found in a garden in Middlesex.
