Thread subject: Diptera.info :: Tachinid for ID, C Spain --> Pales sp.

Taken in the mountains of Madrid on the 18th August 2011. In mixed woodland near flowery meadows.

I am not 100% sure it is Tachinid. Some look too close to Sarcophagidae to me :( Those extremely hairy eyes have me puzzled. Help me, please!

A dorsal view.

It's definitely a tachinid - I believe hairy eyes are very rare (absent?) in sarcophagids and the thorax is not striped in the same way as in the Sarcophagini :)

That said, I am not 100% sure what it is ... the parafacial area is very wide so possible something in the Goniini but I'd need a specimen to key through to be able to take it to genus :)

Thanks a bunch for your reply, Chris! :) Knowing it is indeed a Tachinid makes me very happy ;) I am hopeless with Sarcophagidae :(

At least I can try to see the chances with Spanish Goniini, instead of trying to track it down in the wrong family :S :@ :D

WOW!! Thanks again, Theo!! :)

I have checked and there are only 3 species in Spain:

- pavida
- processioneae
- pumicata

No idea if there is a chance to know the species. But I am pretty happy knowing the genus ;)

It is not pumicata and pavida and processioneae are extremely similar in the female sex.
That is why ... .Pales without species

Thanks, Theo!!

Didn't expect to get the species, it was just in case... :)

But it is great to know why it is not possible to get it. Very happy with my Pales sp. though! :D

Chris, I am afraid this isn't the only Pales that got away. Have a look at my new thread ;) I think that one might be a Pales too.
