Hi,

I ressently discovered Tipula pagana in one place, but i wonder if this is not holoptera: there is only a few hairs on the S8 (sorry, the picture is not really good, but we see all the hairs there is) the fourth picture is to compare, it is a T pagana S8.





There is lot differences between the two population:
My pagana are about 9mm, but these ones are bigger (10mm, but they look more "heavier" ) the coloration is different, pagana look really clear, these are more grey brown and the pagana i found was leaving in wood, but i found these in grassland (near wood, but i could not find any in the wood!)

So do you think it is holoptera? I found no female in the both population, and i found no information about a different habitat for these species.

Go to the World Catalogue of Craneflies (http://nlbif.eti.uva.nl/ccw/) and look at the citations for pagana and holoptera to find information on what has been published recently about their habitats.
Pictures for the hypopgyium of pagana and holotera are few.

In case your holoptera is indeed holoptera (as it seems to be), than it is new for France.
