Hi,

I'm wondering if these can be identified to species, they appear to have all black legs. Female ~2.5mm, male barely 2mm. 29th June on grass at the roadside, near Lincoln UK. There was a big Sciomyzidae in front of them eating a beetle!

I really don't have a clue! There are no references on this site to that species, but it is on the list for the UK and records show some have been found a little north of me, and some further south.

If you are using a key, what are the features for this species?

Arista dark, and not pubescent, thorax with microscopic dusting or pile, Last joint of all tarsi not particularly dilated and not longer than third joint, jowls below eyes very narrow and not wider at narrowest part than tip of front tibia and not wider towards front….

Of course current some other characters that they are similar or sometimes different from your samples, (also by picture is difficult to do id exactly) that making me doubtful.. Hopefully some guys can help us… :)

Thank you Sara, the characters you have mentioned do look OK so far! But yes, there may be others which are similar and some characters which don't fit.
