Hello All

I wonder if any one has experience with this small fly . i watched it for some time it repaeated circular dances around the leaf flashing its wings sporadically but slowly . It was about 5-8 mm quite small with a metallic purple sheen to the abdomen which is barrel shaped This is found in the NW of England 14/08/11 near a river on adjacent vegetation nettle bramble and balsam

Sepsis fulgens should be the most likely one. Please, bear in mind that 'lesser duing flies' usually is reserved for the family Sphaeroceridae (see for example the volume in the Handbooks for the Identification of British Insects by Brian Pitkin).
