Thread subject: Diptera.info :: Yet another Bulgarian Horsefly

This is another of the horsefly species that I recently photographed in Bulgaria. This one was found at Banderitsa on 3 Aug and photographed in the field. I do not have the specimen of this one as having taken a few images it flew off! I am hoping however that sufficient features are evident for an identification to be possible. I will post three here but I do have some additional images.

Many thanks

I'm absolutely no expert, but to me, it looks like Philipomyia sp. Wait for Theo or another expert opinion.

Yes, it is Philipomyia.
The antenna is suprisingly dark, but I see some orange on it, so it must be Ph. aprica.

At sea cost, I'd rather expected Ph. graeca (even in Bulgaria)

Very many thanks to you both. I assume you mean sea coast Theo but we were at no time near the sea.

Thank you again

My mistake. I though you mentioned 'East Bulgaria' which is all pretty lowland in my experience, but I don't know where I got this idea of 'East'..

Higher in them mountains, one might expect aprica.

We were mostly in the Pirin mountains based in two centres at Melnik and at Bansko, This was a Naturetrek Tour that I was co-leading. The overall diversity of insects that we saw was absolutely staggering with many really impressive things from a wide diversity of groups including no fewer than 87 butterfly species in the course of the week.

Many thanks again

OK, Pirin definitely qualifies as 'high'

Thanks
