I am a new member and would like to know which syrphid I photographed on 23-6-2011 near Bonnieux, Vaucluse, Provence, France. The fly was visiting flowers on the top of the Petit Luberon, and was really big, even bigger than Volucella zonaria.
thank you and greetings

Not a species I am familiar with, but wing veins look like Bombyliidae?

Bombyliidae. DO you have more pictures? (dorsal and frontal views )

I'd say Tabanidae,
Pangonius cf.
micans.

Thanks guys, it must be Pangonius micans, as it looks more like this species than the other 3 species in France (griseipennis, haustellatus, mauritanus). I include another (not so good) picture.

Stephane is right. It is Pangonius - Tabanidae. Sorry for my mistake.
