Photograph taken in July 2011, South East England, in-land rural/horticultural/agricultural environment.

I'm pretty sure this is Scaptomyza (This is one of only 3 genera of fly I can recognise!), and male. I would guess Scaptomyza pallida, but then I can't actually recognise any other scaptomyza... Is it possible to get to species from this photo?

Thanks!

A bit pregnant for a male :D. S. pallida should be ok.

Thanks! - I agree (s)he / it is very tubby - but they looked like claspers to me... (I once had to sex ~1000 S. pallida, but had the benefit of a microscope, unconcious flies, and an abdominal view!)

Wow - I had no idea that a male could be thus fat! (At least a fly male :D :D)
