Thread subject: Diptera.info :: Tachinid? Fly for ID please

Found near Barnsley, South Yorkshire on the 3rd July.

Been suggested that its a Tachinid with possible ID's of Eumea linearicornis , Epicampocera succincta or Lypha dubia but there are question marks about each of these possiblities.

Any further help much appreciated.

Looks like Nemorilla floralis - note the triangular arrangement of bristles on humeral callus (shoulder) ;)

Cheers Chris:)

Just had a quick look at some pics online and it looks right (to me anyway- i.e. total novice but trying to learn;))

Is it usual for Barnsley (found in my back garden)?

Well, it used to be much commoner than it is now, that's for sure - there are plenty in collections. I have never caught one in the wild but people do send me the occasional specimen now and again ... but they're not common, for sure, and Barnsley might be a nice record - send us the info (date, place, grid reference, observer's name etc.) and we'll database it :)

PS: gardens do seem to be a favourite habitat - the ones I have been given over the years tend to be from gardens :)

No - better start a different thread for the full answer to that question ;)
