Thread subject: Diptera.info :: Too big for a deer/horse fly?

This very large fly showed up at my house in Northern Virginia. It's around an inch to an inch and a quarter in length.

I've never seen a fly this large.

Popular consensus is that this is either a horse fly or a deer fly, but it seems too big for that to be correct. Also, the horseflies I've seen around here are usually completely black, not striped like this one.

What do you think? Anyone know for sure what this is?

The size is ok; mine (see http://www.dipter...d_id=10694) was as big. However, I have no idea which species you have in Virginia - sorry...
BTW, welcome to the Forum! Hope you enjoy it, even if it is a bit Old World-centered...
