Hello..
I have seen this in previous years but have never managed any good photos. This year I have photos which hopefully will give it a name. I have searched old threads for Crumomyia, C. nitida seems to come close and there seems to be a hook-like protrusion from around the base of the hind femur visible in one pic.
The colour being very black makes me wonder if it could be C. nigra, there's only one reference to it on this site and that's a document concerning flies found in sow dung. There are pigs not very far away.
I found it where I always see this species, on Primrose leaves in a sem-shady spot of my garden near a drain, on 28th May. Location is near Lincoln UK. Size ~5mm

FWIW, I think C. nitida is right.
I think so too Stephen, but I don't know if C. nigra also has some sort of hook-like protrusion.
Can anyone confirm this?
