Have tried to find info on this one without much luck
Spotted on a bush close to Tamborine Mt. QLD Australia in March.

Are we sure that it's a syrphid and not a calliphorid? :) Do you have other angles that show the wing venation?

Looks a lot like Rhinia apicalis. I get here in Townsville.

Could be, but I thought Rhinia was less hairy than this fly - that's why i suggested Stomorhina . Someone else may be able to give a definitive answer.

Thanks for the suggestions.
I'll go with stomorhina for now.
It seems to be hairy and also has a striped abdomen.
