At sloe hedge (northwest Germany), rather big (9 mm).

Could be Protocalliphora ? Based on the colouration.

I had ruled that genus out, because I usually find it only in late summer. But that was based only on my limited experience.

Juergen,
till a week ago, my experience was limited in the same way !
Now it seems, that Protocalliphora hibernates sometimes as imago. See another recent thread on this issue.
