That was my initial thought but I expected to see 'the golden fleece' or at least some golden hairs around the sides of the scutum!

I think remnants of the golden hairs are still there and visible - looking like pollen on the thorax. You have to remember that these flies hatched last year and have been hibernating so they aren't in great condition ;)

Yes you are right Chris, this is Pollenia
Any ideas where I can get a key? it's probably a common species and that mask under the eyes may be characteristic!

My understanding is that
Pollenia (like many groups of flies) require specimens and can't reliably be identified from photos :)
