Here is a photo from Stéphane Brule in French Guiana. Could anyone say which family it belongs to - or any more information? :)

Most likely totally wrong, but I had to think of Ulidiidae

It reminds me of Chaetopsis, moderately common in North America.

Wow - those Chaetopsis really do look very similar - thanks :)

Unfortunately, it can be either Chaetopsis major, an Euxesta or a few other genera: no key characters are visible.
There are thirteen described species of Chaetopsis, eight of which occur in North America, southward to Mexico, Cuba and Puerto Rico; five species are known from southern Brazil and Argentina. The only Central American species, C. major (Wulp), recorded from Mexico, USA, El Salvador (Steyskal, 1968) and Nicaragua (Painter, 1955), is represented also by material from Honduras, Colombia and Costa Rica (Kameneva, 2004a).

Thanks Valery - I have amended it to just "Ulidiidae" :)

Is Chaetopsis major the current combination for Euxesta major van der Wulp or are they distinct species?
