this afternoon I saw this quite coloured fly about 9 mm long with a red abdomen

Very nice - Tachinidae - Ectophasia sp. ... my guess E.leucoptera ... maybe :) Did you take a specimen so that we can be sure?

the abdomen was entirely red, with no sign or dark line
