Hello,

this tabanidae is from last july from switzerland. Lenght was about 12mm. Can anything be said about it? Genus perhaps?

Thanks,
Michael

It is certainly a female Hybomitra and very likely, it is H. montana

Why not H. bimaculata, Theo? Too dark antennae?

Yes, Libor, the antenna is very dark indeed and seems pretty slender,
the frons seems to be parallel-edged (but, I admit, difficult to judge) and the reddish sidemarks are too small for bimaculata (in general).

A very nice feature of the montana-groups versus bimaculata-group is that the eye colour in living material is much more vivid green in montana, as nicely shown in this picture. Excellent feature in living material !

You might be bothered by the dark notopleural lobes, this is indeed unusual for lowland montana but pretty common in mountain-montana.

But, I agree, montana is by no means sure.

Thank you for your answers and for the explanation. But what are the notopleural lobes?
