Hello,

Is it possible to say which Bolitophila sp. this is? It was on 28th January 2010 at the edge of my pond. Size I'm not sure of, anything from 7-10mm. Near Lincoln UK.

Janet :)

Perhaps B.saundersii most likely, that's probably as much as you can say.

Thanks John, I had seen a drawing of a male B. saundersii on delta-intkey, the wing venation looks good for that.

If you think it's a probability too I'm happy with a cf. which is not so bad for one of these. ;)

Shame the antennal pubescence isn't visible - its long in saundersii.

Aah, it might not be saundersii then. I had noticed the long hairs on the drawing but wasn't sure if the female would have them too.

I cropped part of the antennae closer.. actually it wasn't in a good state, it looked like it had just emerged but wasn't making it. We had very cold weather then. If it had longer hairs they could be stuck down but I think I can see short hairs.

I'll have to have another look at the key.
