Hello!

Any chance to get a genus ID at least? I'm not even sure, if these two individuals are from the same species. 6-7 mm, from forest border, northwest Germany.

Hi Juergen,

In Joke's absence I'll have a shot at this, but treat with caution! In the first picture we can see a long-haired arista, so I think the choice is between Hydrophoria and Hylemya. From the leg colours it should be either Hydrophoria linogrisea or Hylemya vagans/nigrimana (the females can't be separated).

You may be able to see in your photos whether the scutellum is completely covered with short hairs (Hydrophoria) or there is at least a hair-free area at the base (Hylemya). If it's H. vagans/nigrimana there should also be no small hairs between the presutural acrostichals, but this may not be clearly visible.

If I had to place a bet, I think it would be on Hydrophoria linogrisea, but I don't have enough experience for this to be of much use to you!

Good luck, Stephen :)

Hi, Stephen!

Many thanks for your explanations. Very appreciated!

But I am afraid even on the uncompressed original photos it is not visible, whether the scutellum is covered with short hairs (too bad resolution). I can only see the larger setae.

I've got lots of photos like that - very frustrating :@
