This fly isn't in very good condition but I'm hoping its distinctive face profile might give it away. Eyes and arista bare, 3 ps dc, all veins bare dorsally, abdominal excavation nowhere near apical, abdominal bristles really too damaged to comment on, but the only strong ones marginal on tergite 4, 3 prs marginal scutellar bristles but apical pr missing, no bristles on face, a few hairs on cheek. Any takers?

Strange looking fly - does it have a subscutellum? The wing venation looks a bit sarcophagid-ish to me :)
Is the grey colour original or is is pollen/dust?

The colour is true. It was caught on an area of sandy waste from gravel processing with a diverse community of hymenoptera. That's a great lead, thanks to both of you. It does resemble Senotainia conica and I think I can get access to a key to make sure.

Yeah, that explains why I haven't seen them before - sarcophagid AND from a sandy area :D
