13th October, on Ivy, my garden near Lincoln K. Approx 9mm.

Janet, Tetanocera is correct. But arrogans has pd on f3, this fly has not. In addition arrogans is mostly spring species. This one is most probably ferruginea.

Is there any way of telling it's ferruginea for sure?
