Hi All,
I just happened across this stunning fly with its big eyes, hairy bronze back and stunning lime green abdomen with dark pattern and with long shiny wings. Even the haltere are lime green. Any ideas?

Thanks Chris, I guess that explains why it was so easy to approach while it was basking. Seems soldier flies are pretty laid back about people.

I found a pretty close match on an Aussie website based on your information except it has a green thorax.
