7+mm, Yorkshire [EDIT: actually Lancashire - see below] UK, 29 May 2009.

Would I be right to label this as male Keroplatidae? Any idea on genus?

I think you're in the right Family. I would have to check my collection to narrow it down.

Mmm, nothing sems to fit really. I wonder if its one of the larger Sciarids?

No it is not! Compare carefully wing veins with typical sciarid wing. R4 runs into R1: Platyura marginata (male) the only western Palaearctic species...

so long,

Stephen, do you have a locality for this specimen?
It's a species I've never found.

Cheers,

John

Now I look more carefully John, I see it was not Yorkshire (Grass Wood in Wharfedale) but the next day in Moor Piece Reserve, Bashall Eaves near Clitheroe. It's mixed birch and youngish oak on very wet ground (with pine on the drier bits) and there's plenty of dead wood lying around and lots of fungi. If you fancy coming over some time, I'll take you there. Send me a PM.
