Can anyone help with this ID please. It has the obvious characteristics of a crane fly but I have never seen these markings before.

Could it be Culiseta annulata - a big mosquito? Got any more angles that show a proboscis?

Hello Peter,
It looks much more like a mosquito (culicidae). Culiseta annulata, perhaps ?

The picture does show a nice big fat proboscis, don't you think ? ;)

Well, I was a bit confused as to whether it was a proboscis or the continuation of the right leg :) But yes, there's something big pointing forwards and I suppose it is thicker than the leg could have been :) Well, I am just glad that I guessed the correct name anyway :D

Thank you Chris and Phillippe:)

I had missed the proboscis entirely, thinking it was one of its front legs:|

I have gone through my shoot of the day and found this image which confirms everything you both saidB)
