Hi,
can anyone suggest a species this 10mm fly?
I take the photo on 28 September 2010 Kokkola, Finland.

Regards Pentti.

I think it is Sylvicola punctatus of Anisopodidae.

I am now working with Finnish Anisopodidae and I do not agree with Stephen. Wing of S. punctatus has dark band from pterostigma to middle of the wing. This specimen is either S. stackelbergi or S. fuscatoides.

Or fuscatus. You need a few of the genitalia...

Yes, S. fuscatus is possible but not probable.
All specimens I have seen from Finland earlier determined as fuscatus were stackelbergi or fuscatoides.

True, but it cannot be ruled out. Michelsen (1999) states:
Distribution. − Europe, ranging from France and Italy to southern Scandinavia, eastward to Russian Transcaucasus.
A record from Finland (Hackman 1980) almost certainly refer to either S. stackelbergi Krivosheina & Menzel or S. fuscatoides sp. n.
