5mm Clitheroe UK 21 September 2010.

Is this a Mycomya sp.? Male or female?

Stephen:

In the second image at tip of abdomen you can see the male genitalia (the dark compact appendage). Though there are some Mycomya species with long CuA stem and short CuA fork (e.g. Mycomya obliqua), they do not posses such a tergite IX. It looks like Megalopelma nigroclavatum a widespread species in Europe. Do you have additional images?

Edit: m to CuA

Thanks Xylo. I'm afraid all the other pictures are very poor, and from much the same angle. It didn't stay long.

If I find another, what do you need to see?

Stephen.

I would need to see, whether anepisternum is haired or not (closeup lateral thorax sclerites), sc2 well beyond Rs and macrotrichia on wing not decumbent (plain wing shot) or a better dorsal view on genitalia to exclude one of the dark Sciophila species. However, I am still convinced having here a M. nigroclavatum and I would place some money on it.

That's good enough for me! I don't know if this crop from the first photo gives any more confirmation?

Stephen.

To be honest: I do not see any more details nor whether anepisternum is haired or not. That is the big disadvantage of images in contrast to have specimen for microscopic studies handy. Anyway, the narrow wing, bristly scutum and dark knob of halteres supporting M. nigroclavatum.
