Hi Andrzej.
like Brian, I am turning up a lot of Heleomyzids in Southern England just now, but don't have the literature to ID them (yet!) a good number are a very close visual match to Brian's photo. what has one to look for to be absolutely sure it's
S. variegata?

Well, very simple are the combinations of the strongly marked wings, the hairs on the sides of the thorax and plumose antenna's. With this combination you most likely have a S. variegata.
