Just as a pointer Nick - the conopids do look a bit like syrphids but the wing venation is all wrong ;)

Thanks guys - syrphidae was a guess, I too wasn't happy about the venation (honestly!) but didn't know why (I couldn't see the vena spuria but to be honest couldn't see much there really, all a bit confused with the wings closed).
Anyway, thanks again.
