Any help appreciated, I'd like to know where to start if possible!
Approximately 6mm long, it was settled on a runner bean (Phaseolus coccineus). I took a few photos in situ but it was difficult to steady the bean in the wind so I picked the pod and sat and photographed it at leisure. The fly totally ignord me, while it continued to perform some strange 'dance' with its legs.

Stratiomyids are pretty easy to spot because they look like a 'funny' hoverfly with a roundish cell in the middle of the wing :)

Thanks guys, I did think it might be a syrphidea and spent several minutes going through the galleries but couldn't find anything quite right.
