I have looked in many places to identify this fly. Apologies for the bad quality of photo, the fly was quite a distance away.

Welcome to the forum Christina - this looks like
Eriothrix rufomaculata, a tachinid parasitoid of
Crambus moths :) It often helps if you add your Location ... advice would differ if you were in Australia, for instance ;)

Thank you for the welcome and identification ChrisR. The location was Rye Mead, an RSPB nature reserve in Hertfordshire, which is near Hoddesdon. Hope this helps and I shall remember to put up the location when I post.
