I am not Theo, but I know :-) Hybomitra auripila is considered as color variety of Hybomitra atterima, It was synonymised by Wolfgang Schacht.

Theo, as I know, Mally did not published it, he wrote it in hid unpublished dissertation only? Schacht published it in: http://www.biologiezentrum.at/pdf_frei_remote/ENT_0015_0521-0534.pdf

Aha. The dissertation by Mally was never published ?
That is new to me.
So you are right. The synonymy has informally been established by Mally, but only formally by Schacht.

Schacht informed me that Mally published only few papers including Austrian checklist and then he finished Tabanid studies :-( Do you have Mally's dissertation for sending as the PDF? :-)

No, actually I have never seen Mally's thesis. And the library of the NEderlandse Entomologische Vereniging does not have a copy, whereas this library in the in top-5 worldwide in completeness. So, it is really obscure or at least hard to find.
It did a pretty intensive Google search, but got only to Mally's 1989 contribution to the Austrian checklist and irrelevant other matters.
