Thanks, with it narrowed down to Tabanidae I searched the gallery and found Tabanus autumnalis which I then searched on Bioimages web site http://www.bioimages.org.uk/html/t79326.htm to find more photos. The wing pattern pretty much matches photos on that site for female. Would anyone like to confirm this for me (or reject it??)

Yes, its T. autumnalis. The pattern on the abdomen of 3 rows of light grey spots is distinctive for a large tabanid.
