This was photographed at Bin Forest NJ54 in NE Scotland on 10 April 2010.

Is anyone able to confirm its identity, please?

Yes ... there is a clear pale band across at least one of the tergites. It is also very hairy and lacks the orange wedges on T1+2 and T3 that I'd expect to see on T.lurida. Furthermore the date is too early for T.lurida :)

BTW, Matt Smith showed me this photo a few days ago so this is second time around ;)

Thanks, Chris. That is the third in the N of Scotland this year to my knowledge. I had not heard back from Matt, so tried plan B!

Ahh, OK ... Matt gets busy and drops off the radar sometimes. Tachina ursina is an odd species anyway and it is probably commoner than we think - just because they are flying at times when most dipterists are not out and also you have to be lucky with the weather to see them sunning at that time of year ;)
