Compares favourably to http://www.dipter...to_id=3883, Notiphila brunnipes, but might be another Notiphila species.

Hello Paul,

The frontpart seems to be much the same!
So will this be a Notiphila cf brunnipes or Notiphila spec.?

Greetings,
Hedy

Cranefly is better than me on these species. Change thread title to "Notiphila species?" and she will probably pick it up.

Notiphila aquiatica Becker is the most probable: antennae yellow with apical segment darkened, cheeks narrow, scutum brown, all tibiae black. Notiphila brunipes has antennae with 2 basal segments black and the apical segment significantly darkened. :)

Cranefly, afaik Notiphila aquatica is not recorded from the Netherlands (correct me if I'm wrong!) Can similar species like N. riparia be excluded from this picture?

I don't know any work where N.aquatica is registered in Netherlands.
If this fly has the following characters:
antennae yellow with darkenes apical segment, face with several (2) strong setae (not with many weak thin hairs), all tibia black (sometimes the most apices may be yellowish), scutum brown without spots. Cheeks narrow. Notiphila aquatica. ;)

P.S. Notiphila riparia has yellow tibia with dark band:)

Thanks for your reaction, I'm convinced. I know N. riparia has yellow tibiae, but I did not know about a dark band. There is clearly no dark band here in the picture so then N. aquatica should be ok.

There is no trustable record of Notiohila aquatic from germany and all specimens I have seen from Europe so far turned out to be wrongly identified. The species can perhaps only be identified with characters of the male post abdomen.

I don not think that a species diagnosis is possible with a photo.

However not so many species of Notiphila with all black tibiae. So, in this case, possible:P

I'm enjoying this conversations and to add to confusion or to gain certainty I may add this picture...
There were a few of them and in due time I will add some to our Dutch species list.

Thanks to all for your contribution!!

Hedy
