6+mm Clitheroe England 21 May 2010.

I thought if I caught a male I would be able to identify it from Michael Ackland's plates; but I can't convince myself that it is either A. procellaris or A. pluvialis. I have no plate for A. bazini. Can anyone help?

A. bazini is in the plates of Michael keys (plate 1). You haven't it ?

Yes thank you, I've found it. Must have been too late at night.

On further inspection I think A. procellaris is the best fit, from what I can see and understand. Would you agree? It would tend to reinforce the presumption that the ones with the black areas merged in front of the wing are likely to be A. procellaris in this part of the world. Do you know how likely we are to find A. bazini in Northern England?

I think your are right with A. procellaris, but you are better placed than I to judge ;) I agree that we could rule out Anthomyia pluvialis by the thoracic pattern.
Concerning your last question about A . bazini, you've better ask to Michael.

Thanks again Stephane. Perhaps Michael will pick this up next time he's around.
